Fireworks Safety And Injury Prevention Tips

sparklers

Independence Day is a time for fireworks and fun with family and friends, but it’s important to celebrate safely. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that 250 Americans go to the hospital with fireworks related injuries every day in the month leading up to the Fourth of July. Everyone should learn what to do when someone is injured by fireworks.

What Types of Injuries Do Fireworks Cause?

Fireworks and sparklers can cause second degree burns to the skin if handled improperly. Such injuries are typically mild in nature, but they may require some medical attention. In rare cases, fireworks can cause more severe third degree burns. Fireworks can also injure eyes and singe hair. Young people are at a greater risk for serious injuries from fireworks, so seek medical help quickly for children burned.

What Should You Do When Someone Gets Injured by Fireworks?

  • If you can, remove any clothing or jewelry around the burn.
  • As soon as possible, hold the burn under cool running water for several minutes until the pain starts to subside. Do not use ice, creams or gels because they can cause infections and tissue damage.
  • Cover the burn site with a non-fluffy wet towel or cloth.
  • If blisters form, do not try to burst them.
  • Cover broken skin with clean plastic wrap to guard against infections.
  • Seek professional medical attention to assess the severity of the burn.

Fireworks Safety Tips

  • Read and follow all package instructions.
  • Always supervise children.
  • Only use fireworks outdoors, but avoid grass and other flammable objects.
  • Light only one firework at a time.
  • Don’t stand over the fuse when lighting it.
  • Back away several feet immediately after lighting the fuse.
  • Do not point or throw fireworks at people or pets.
  • Do not try to re-light or fix broken fireworks.
  • Do not carry fireworks in your pocket.
  • Only use legal fireworks; don’t make your own.
  • Keep a hose or water bucket nearby to put out fires.

Stay safe this summer, but also be prepared for emergencies.
